Paul Merson Explodes Over ‘Stonewall’ Penalty Denial as Leeds Feel Robbed by Brooks and VAR Against Tottenham

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson was left seething after Leeds United were denied what many viewed as a clear penalty in the early stages of their Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road.

Just minutes into the contest, Gabriel Gudmundsson whipped in a dangerous cross from the left. Tottenham midfielder Mateus Fernandes stretched out an arm to intercept the ball, which appeared to strike him before looping clear. Leeds players, led by Dominic Calvert-Lewin, immediately appealed, and the home crowd roared for a spot-kick. Referee John Brooks waved play on.VAR official Tony Harrington reviewed the incident but backed the on-field decision.

The Premier League Match Centre later confirmed: “The referee’s call of no penalty to Leeds United was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Fernandes did not commit a handball offence.” Harrington’s explanation noted that the ball struck “the very top of the arm as he is leaning – in the green zone,” referring to the area above the bottom of the armpit that is not considered a handball under current IFAB guidelines. The decision sparked fury among Leeds supporters and pundits alike.

Merson, never one to hold back, launched into a characteristic rant on air, branding the call a robbery and questioning the consistency of VAR interpretations. Replays showed Fernandes’ arm clearly extended, and critics argued the contact looked far more deliberate than the “green zone” explanation suggested.Despite the early setback, Daniel Farke’s side recovered to claim a vital 1-0 victory. Substitute Noah Okafor scored the decisive goal in the 79th minute with virtually his first touch after coming off the bench, ending Leeds’ five-game winless run and handing Tottenham their first defeat in five matches.

The handball controversy, however, dominated post-match discussion. While the Premier League stood by its officials, the incident once again highlighted the ongoing frustration with handball rules and VAR’s application. For Leeds fans, it felt like another example of their side being hard done by – and Merson’s explosive reaction only amplified the sense of injustice.
